I Take Risks
While creating my watermelon sculpture, I was unsure about making a triangle shaped slice of watermelon. I was nervous that I wouldn't be able to sculpt it correctly and that it would fall apart. So I took a risk and tried it any way. I achieved the perfect triangle look with newspaper, a needle tool, and a lot of patience. Overall, I really enjoyed sculpting this piece. I'm very proud of how the glaze turned out as well.
We Collaborate
At the beginning of this project I had originally made the seeds by trying to outline the clay in the shape of a seed. But after consulting with the people at my table and Ms. Rossi, I decided to form a clay seed and then attach it to the watermelon. This made my clay watermelon look even more realistic.
I Solve Problems
While sculpting the triangle shaped watermelon, I ran into the problem of the clay con-caving. I fixed this problem by adding more newspaper on the inside of the sculpture to support the clay. After my purple plate had been glazed, it was left with a random, elevated, uneven piece sitting on top. This was due to another piece that was set on top of mine in the kiln. I fixed this problem by sanding down the additional piece to try and make it smooth.
