This week I added a design to the separate piece my bowl will sit on. I'm not completely sure that I like the design. I'm struggling to figure out what kind of design/pattern I should change it to. I also started glazing my bowl this week. So far I have only used the black and clear glaze. I am making sure to take my time applying multiple layers of glaze, so that it does not end up looking streaky.
At this point in my progression I have created a bowl on the wheel, added a foot (the day after), and carved in some Aztec designs for decoration. I'm still not sure how I want to paint this or what colors I should use. (I will most likely stay with earth tone colors.) But so far I am liking the shape and designs. Today I started sculpting an additional piece that the bowl will sit on.
Victoria Wagner is a female artist who paints on geometric shaped wood, to make the wood appear like a gem. She calls her pieces "woodrocks". Each piece is painted with oil paint. Wagner uses gradients that evoke mostly natural tones found in sunsets, water, or outdoor landscapes.
The creativity and neatness of her work, is what inspires me. All of her woodrocks look so carefully painted with lines that flow smoothly with the grain of the wood; giving it a flawless look. Wagner has inspired me to be more patient, neat, and creative when working on my own pieces. http://www.victoriawagner.com/
Out of the 30+ ideas that I had written down, I decided to go with the culture theme. Narrowing my ideas down to one was hard but I did it by eliminating the themes that I could not relate to/ had no interest in. Then I narrowed my list down even further by eliminating the themes that I did not think I could create multiple projects from. This process lead me right to the theme of cultures. I chose this theme because I have multiple ideas on how to include different cultures into my art works.
